Integration, productivity and technological spillovers: Evidence for eurozone banking industries
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the context of the debate on increased integration of Eurozone banking markets, this paper evaluates the impact of the Single Market on bank productivity and assesses the cross-border benefits of integration in terms of technological spillovers. We utilise a parametric meta-frontier Divisia index to estimate productivity change and identify technological gaps. We then assess the extent to which productivity converges within and across banking industries as a result of technological spillovers. Our results suggest that bank productivity growth has occurred for most Eurozone countries up to the onset of the financial crisis, but has since reversed. Technological spillovers do exist, and have led to progression toward the best technology. However, convergence is not complete and significant long run differences in productivity persist. Improvements in technology are increasingly driven by a smaller number of banks and concentrated in fewer banking industries. WP No 14-005 2nd Quarter 2014

Workers' Education, Spillovers, and Productivity: Evidence from Plant-Level Production Functions
I assess the magnitude of human capital spillovers by estimating production functions using a unique firm-worker matched data set. Productivity of plants in cities that experience large increases in the share of college graduates rises more than the productivity of similar plants in cities that experience small increases in the share of college graduates. These productivity gains are offset by ...
متن کاملForeign Knowledge Spillovers and Total Factor Productivity Growth: Evidence from Four ASEAN Countries
This study examines the dynamic relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and total factor productivity having controlled for other channels of external openness: exports and imports in four ASEAN countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. We employ the panel data analysis PDA (fixed effect and dynamic panel models) as well as the panel cointegration and Granger causali...
متن کاملNATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SPILLOVERS FROM R&D: Comparing a Neoclassical and an Endogenous Growth Approach
Two models where productivity growth is caused by spillovers from R&D are analysed using a sample of nine manufacturing industries in six large OECD-countries between 1979 and 1991. The first model is based on traditional productivity analysis where growth in R&D stocks causes productivity growth. The second model is based on the endogenous growth literature where the level of R&D expenditures ...
متن کاملForeign Direct Investment Spillovers and Productivity Growth in Indonesian Garment and Electronics Manufacturing
Inflows of foreign direct investment generate externalities that spill over to domestic firms and raise their productivity. This article examines the extent of spillover effects of foreign direct investment for firms in the highly disaggregated garment (ISIC 3221) and electronics industries (ISIC 3832) in Indonesia. Both are export-intensive industries, but differ greatly in technological sophi...
متن کاملHigher education, technical efficiency and total productivity changes: evidence from Iran's manufacturing industries
The purpose of this article was to estimate the effect of higher education on total productivity changes and technical efficiency in the 4-digit classification code of ISIC in Iran during the period of 1994-04. In this regard, a two-way stage approach was used. In the first stage, Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) and technical efficiency index by Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Stochastic...
